In the modern global economy, the strength of a nation’s infrastructure is not only measured by its roads, ports, railways, and water supply systems, but also by the invisible threads of light that carry its data across the world. For South Africa, the transition to a digital-first economy is not just a technological upgrade; it is a socio-economic imperative. At the sixth South Africa Investment Conference, Maziv’s pledge of a R9 billion investment over the next five years signalled more than a commitment to fibre, it signalled a profound commitment to South Africa and the next generation.

Central to this investment is a transformative commitment: the creation of direct and indirect employment opportunities.  While headlines often focus on the sheer scale of capital expenditure, the real story lies in the human capital that this expenditure will unlock.

In a country where youth unemployment remains one of our most pressing national challenges, the telecommunications sector must be viewed not merely as an infrastructure provider, but one of the engines to drive job creation and economic participation.

When we speak of job creation in the telecommunications sector, it is easy to visualise technicians in hard hats laying cables. While these technical roles are vital, the scope of employment generated by Maziv’s rollout is more expansive.

The multiplier effect of high-speed fibre infrastructure means that for every kilometre of fibre buried in the ground, an ecosystem of opportunity is cultivated above it.

Economic Participation

By extending high-speed connectivity to underserved areas, we are also removing the geographic barriers to economic participation and contributing towards levelling the playing ground for a developer in a township or a young business owner in an underserved community who can now compete on a global stage.

The telecommunications sector is uniquely positioned to empower a bottom-up economic model. Maziv’s open-access model is a critical component of this. By maintaining a platform that encourages competition among various internet service providers, we lower the barrier to entry for smaller, youth-owned businesses. This competition doesn't just lower cost to communicate for the consumer; it creates a demand for a range of support and technical services.

We recognise that job creation is accelerated when local businesses are empowered to service their own communities. Through our fibre rollout, we are providing the digital utilities that allow a young entrepreneur to launch an e-commerce platform, a remote tutoring service, or a digital health startup.

A Social Mandate as an Economic Driver

Thought leadership in the South African context must consistently acknowledge that business success and social upliftment are inextricably linked. Maziv’s commitment to providing free, uncapped 1Gbps high-speed connectivity to schools, public clinics, and public libraries passed by our network is one of the ways we are investing in the communities we operate in, whilst ensuring that we support the South African development goals.

By providing connectivity to our education and healthcare institutions, we are ensuring that the next generation of South Africans is digitally native. A student who learns to code in a connected library today is the software engineer of tomorrow. A nurse who uses digital records at a clinic is developing the data literacy required for the modern workplace.

We are building the infrastructure that creates job opportunities, while simultaneously supporting the systems that prepare our youth to fill them.

As we reflect on the meaning of Youth Day, Maziv’s R9 billion pledge stands as a testament to our belief in the country’s youth and potential. We are not only building a network; we are building a foundation for inclusive economic participation.

In the grand tapestry of South Africa’s development, we are proud to provide the thread that connects our youth to a more prosperous, inclusive, and access to digital economy.
